The Low-Fat Dairy Debate

For years, health professionals and the mainstream media have been encouraging the population to opt for low-fat dairy products in lieu of full-fat varieties.  But research is questioning whether non- or low-fat is really all it’s cracked up to be.  Why?

Whole-fat dairy contains a high amount of fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).  New research touts CLA as an aid to weight loss and muscle building and as a deterrent to heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

We work diligently to keep patients aware of cutting-edge research on wellness issues, including nutrition.  While the jury is still out on the low vs full-fat dairy debate, we want our patients to be aware of both sides of this controversial topic, so that they can make their own informed decisions.

When exploring the possible benefits of full-fat dairy foods, it is vital to stress that patients not use this information as an excuse to overindulge.

While whole-fat dairy products may have health benefits, portion size and control is just as important.  The old saying “A little dab will do you” definitely applies.

Doctors of chiropractic uphold that one of the best strategies for preventing disease is to strengthen the immune system.  And, research suggests that CLA may help bolster immunity.

How?  Research implies that CLA may enhance immune function by reducing the production of immune-suppressing compounds (J Immunol 2005;175:4990-8).

On the other hand, another study indicated that CLA supplementation had only a “minimal” effect on the markers of human immune function (Eur J Clin Nutr 2005;59:742-50).Dr. Barbara Smith
